O.K. I admit it. There’s not a lot on television this Summer and TnT doen’t always have Law & Order reruns on Tuesday nights, so I’ve been watching America’s Got Talent. God help me. At first I watched with horrid fascination, the way you can’t turn away from an accident or a really bad teen movie, but now I’m kind of invested, which is never a good thing. I know in the end I’ll be disappointed. No one I think should win will actually win, especially since now the winner will be picked by those Americans dedicated enough to the show to call their votes in or vote from the website…and I admit that even I’m not that dedicated.
Last night was the beginning of the Semi-Finals or whatever. They showed 10 of the 20 that got through all of the auditions and opened up the phone lines so America could further narrow those 10 down to 5. I must say that I have my favorites out of those 10.
Going into the start of the show, I was actually rooting for 5 of them, but the magician Kevin James, who was amazing at the two auditions previously, was a huge let down. Not only was his trick obvious and unimaginative, but you knew he could have done better.
The band Jonny Come Lately is wonderful and I think they have a great sound, despite what the judges said on the show. Come on! When was the last time you saw a music group made of 15-year-olds who could play their own instruments?
Butterscotch is the “beatbox” artist. I love her attitude; she just sort of comes out and does her thing. She has a beautiful singing voice, plays piano, and, yes, can beatbox. Plus, she’s very beautiful as well. David Hasselhoff said she could very well win the whole thing and I think that at the very least, she deserves to move on to the next level.
When you hear Julienne Irwin sing, it’s hard to believe she’s only 14 years old and has had no formal training. She has an amazing voice. If she doesn’t get a record deal out of the exposure she’s gotten from this show, then something is wrong with this world. She’s far better than most of the people you hear on American Idol or it’s rip-offs. She could easily be the next Leanne Rimes.
My fourth and favorite pick from last night is The Glamazons. I love everything about this act. I love that they aren’t afraid to be who they are in front of the whole world and to show the world that even if you aren’t perfect and especially if you aren’t a size 2, you can be beautiful and sexy and talented and glamorous. They have amazing voices and they can certainly dance. I’m proud of them for coming this far. I hope they go all of the way.
However, I don’t know that voting America is ready to be represented by The Glamazons. Despite the fact that the average American is larger than a size 14, I don’t know that America is ready to accept real role models that really could represent them. It’s a shame because we need strong female role models who accept themselves and don’t hate who they are because of size or appearance. It may be PC for America and the media to say how wonderful it is that The Glamazons have made it this far, but I wonder what people were thinking to themselves as they dialed their phones last night or sat at their computers voting.
