I Try To Think About Elvis

in Life

Elvis PresleyOne day in the Summer of ‘93, two friends and I drove from Tuscaloosa, Al, to Graceland for the day on a whim. We had a grand ol’ time, I guess because we didn’t take it seriously.

We asked some incredibly ridiculous questions during the tour like asking for the name of the person who made the handmade Italian glass-cut chandelier and if it was the same person who made the smaller replica in the next room.

Personally I enjoyed the white-trash lavishness of it all (except the narrow, mirrored stairwell, which I had to be carried down because I used to have issues with stairs). There’s something cool about a house with a bowling alley and a pool room made to look like a sleazy lounge bar. Let’s not forget the green shag carpet in the Jungle Room.

Plus, you know me, lover of conspiracy theories, I had a long chat with some of the employees about whether or not Elvis was dead or in hiding. Of course, this was before the statute of limitations on the insurance fraud had run out and that wasn’t far off. We discussed at that time that if he wasn’t dead that Elvis was likely to come back after the statute of limitations ran out. By the way, the employees are not allowed to say one way or the other if he’s dead or not — at least, that what they told me.

I think the staff applauded when we left at closing. Still, it’s one of my favorite memories from my college years.
