Thirteen Things I Believe, 6th

One of my favorite NPR segments is “This I Believe“. I always feel inspired after I hear someone read what it is he or she believes whether it’s religious or about how noisy bookstores have become or about peace in the Middle East. I know that this really isn’t the same. This is really thirteen really really mini “This I Believe”’s, but, hey, maybe one of them will get expanded into something I can send into NPR one day.

Thirteen Things about J. Lynne

I believe nap time should not stop at kindergarten.
I believe you should always wear your best dress clothes to go to the theater or to God’s house. When did it become acceptable to show up in blue jeans and shorts for a night at the opera or worshiping your Creator?
I believe you should not wear your pajamas to the grocery store no matter how comfortable you think they are or how hip you think you look.
I believe jewelry, perfume, and tattoos should all be worn in moderation; you should always be the object of attention, not your accessories.
I believe cell phones should be banned in restaurants, movie theaters, and anywhere I to pay to enjoy the atmosphere. If I want to hear the latest top 100 hit, I’ll pay iTunes 99¢ for it, I don’t need your high pitched version interrupting my $50 dinner.
I believe I can learn a lot from my cats and dog — like the peacefulness of bird-watching, the blissfulness of sunbathing, and the art of staring at the blank spot on the wall.
I believe I’m only as happy as my dog and cats let me be.
I believe meetings should last no longer than 30 minutes and should not be scheduled before 9am or after 4:30pm or during lunch or nap time.
I believe that normal is a conspiratorial lie created to make most of us feel bad. Same with the body mass index and size 0 clothes.
I believe there’s a special hell for micro-managers and politicians.
I believe in ghosts, but not that aliens have visited our planet.
I believe you should never argue with a bus.
I believe God has many faces and the different religions are just the different ways that people need to worship him, but his message of loving one another seems pretty consistent when not twisted by doctrine and rules added on by “the man”.

How Are You Going To Vote? (PunditMom)

The pollsters and the media are trying to convince us that we’ve already made up our minds. Hillary and Rudy are “ahead.” Barack and Fred are in “second-place.” Edwards and McCain are “trailing.”

Doesn’t all this sort of make you feel that the process is a fait accompli? Not one vote has been cast, yet so many commentators and news analysts are already talking as if it’s a foregone conclusion who the nominees are going to be.

I actually heard Tim Russert say on the radio last week that the 2008 Presidential election was going to be over in two months! The implication being that once Iowa and New Hampshire are done voting, there’s no point in the rest of us showing up again until November!

So as you are considering WHO you are going to vote for (please promise me you’ll vote), I’m curious HOW you’re going to arrive at your decision.

Will you vote by consensus or by conscience?

Talk about talk (Third World County)

Many people exercise common sense when formulating their comments. I can appreciate that. Some exercise their sense of humor, and I can appreciate that, usually no matter how weird their sense of humor* may be. Others, and they are few indeed, actually learned in school or elsewhere how to make clear, reasoned arguments. Rare, and greatly appreciated. People I stand to learn much from.

But some just have no business even having an opinion, because they are both too ill-informed and are idiots (usually, as I have said elsewhere, self-made idiots), unable to recognize the value (or even the existence) of arguments from facts or reason, taking their preconceptual biases as fact and building a “reality-based” fantasyland of idiotarian unreason on that shaky foundation.

Nothing is more fundamental to our constitutional democracy than our basic notion that no one is above the law. This Administration has undercut that precept time after time. They are now trying to do it again, with an issue as fundamental as whether the United States of America will join the ranks of those governments that approve of torture. This President and Vice President should not be allowed to violate our obligations under the Convention Against Torture and the Geneva Conventions or disregard U.S. statutes such as our Detainee Treatment Act and War Crimes Act. They should not be allowed to overturn more than 200 years of our Nation’s human rights and moral leadership around the world.

See, if I were going to task a committee on finding out if abortion negatively impacts women…I probably wouldn’t start with the answer Blunt is hoping to get. Rather, I would start with this: what impacts women more negatively - having an abortion or giving birth to an unwanted child. And then you could also look at the impact on children of being born into a situation where they’re not wanted. Were they kept or put up for adoption? Did they get adopted or did they end up in the juvenile authority system? Regardless of where they ended up, how did they fare against kids who were planned and/or wanted in terms of school, social skills, etc.? You know, I’d try to make it focused on finding an answer to a question, rather than asking the questions to get a specific answer.

I am especially in agreement with #’s 2 and 13. I am by far not a follower of the Christian way of belief, but Goddess help me if I don’t get all gussied up any time I’m accompanying my Christian family members or friends to their place of worship! It’s just respectful! And 13 pretty much sums up my views on it. What loving god wouldn’t offer such diverse creations as us humans more than one way to learn and love him?

I love naps…ahhh! I wish I was taking one right about now. I am from a small town and anytime we went to church you put on your best clothes. Most people did not have a lot of money, but they still dressed respectively. I went to a HUGE church here in L.A. and I was shocked at what I seen. Girls in MESH (YES MESH) tops with bright bras on underneath….miniskirts…TO CHURCH! I feel I am pretty open minded about most things, but this was just too much for me.
