I noticed over the weekend that stores have begun putting out the breast cancer kiosks. You know what I’m talking about, right? Shelves of baby pink novelty items — baby pink mixing bowls, baby pink towels, baby pink socks, baby pink mixers, baby pink spatulas, baby pink slippers, baby pink aprons, baby pink can openers, and so on. Some of them have the darker pink ribbon that represents Breast Cancer Awareness. Some of these items even have Avon Walk for Breast Cancer logos, I discovered.
(For those of you who are clueless, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month…the stores have to get the goodies out early, you know.)
Before you purchase any of this pink stuff with the thought that you are supporting Breast Cancer Research, do your own research. Most of the items I found had nothing on their labels about partial proceeds going Avon Walk for Breast Cancer or Breast Cancer Research. The ones that had the Avon Walk logo only mentioned they are a sponsor of the Avon Walks.
In fact, I have emailed the maker of Apara Jammies socks with Aloe because they have the Avon Walk logo and mention being a sponsor and I wanted to know if the proceeds of their pink socks with the ribbon logo were going to Breast Cancer Research. I have not heard back unsurprisingly.
I’ve never been a supporter of buying the pink novelty stuff. I desperately believe in supporting Breast Cancer Research as my great-grandmother and grandmother both had Breast Cancer, but buying pink stuff that probably doesn’t match your kitchen or bathroom and probably doesn’t really contribute much to the cause anyway really isn’t the way to go. If you are going to give money to the cause, I recommend contacting the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
