According to the Progressive Bag Alliance, Americans use roughly 90 billion plastic bags a year. Plastic bags may take up to 1,000 years to degrade in landfills. Not exactly environmentally friendly. If you’re a dog or cat owner, you probably make good reuse of them. If not…

  • you can order a cotton canvas tote from ReusableBags.com from $4 and up
  • Ikea will charge you a nickel per plastic bag at check out that includes a donation to forest restoration
  • you can buy a reusable shopping tote from Ikea for 59¢
  • grocery store chains Whole Foods and Hannaford not only sell reusable canvas shopping totes of their own, but will give you a discount at checkout for each reusable tote used.
  • ask your local merchants if they provide a discount, if you bring your own environmentally friendly bags to carry your purchases home.

Do you know of other companies providing discounts or benefits for using environmentally friendly totes? Please add your suggestions and advice to the comments.
