Yeah, I'm going to try to go for a bite-size part of the actual epic. Like the epic is happening around the story. You know, like in Signs how the epic is the invasion of the aliens and the world fighting back, but the story is about this one family's survival of just one night of the invasion and the story only takes place over like 2 or 3 days. I want to do something like that.

50k is probably not enough room to deal with epic subjects like civil war. When we think about novels, I think some of us tend to think they must be *huge* and look for epic-size stories, but 50k is actually pretty brief. I'm trying to keep my scope limited.

A handy book -- and short enough to read in the time remaining if you can find it -- is "How to write a damn good novel." I like this one because he discusses developing ideas at length rather than how to characterize, etc. It's mostly about plot.

Also, look into Scrivener (Mac) or PageFour (PC) for writing. Both of those tools help you write in a more non-linear fashion than Word does, and they both also make it easier to stash notes: "research geegaws more fully," etc.
