Thirteen Geeky Knitting Projects, 20th

(I was going to write this last night while watching an hour of Friends reruns but a bizarre issue with the Bad Behavior Wordpress plugin and some blacklisting site kept me from uploading and then accessing my own account from my own computer. But it took me 4½ hours to figure out that because the error said that my computer had been sending out spam mail and that was why I was blacklisted and that if I had any questions I could email the web admin and gave my own email address to contact. So, I updated my McAffee and installed Google’s free Spy Doctor and ran both and came up clean, which I knew I would because I am an IT geek who obsesses about that sort of thing. Finally at 11:30pm a new link showed up in my Google search for answers. Someone had just posted an hour before on the Wordpress.org forum that they also couldn’t get into their site with the same error and someone had replied with a link to the Bad Behavior Blog which explained what happened. Grrrrrrrrr! Wasted my whole Wednesday night.
And then today after I spent forever writing this up, my server went down and I couldn’t save it…for over an hour.)
Whenever I start a new hobby, I go a little overboard searching for future possible projects. The nice thing about knitting as opposed to counted cross-stitch, which I did through my 20’s, is that there are a lot of free patterns out there on the Internet and a lot of people who are willing to share their ideas. Plus, as it turns out, there are also a lot of geeky guys and gals just like me who have merged the hobby with their eccentric personalities. Some of these made me laugh out loud. Some of them are just too fun to resist.

Thirteen Things about J. Lynne
- Firefly Jayne Cobb’s Hat — That hat Jayne’s mother made him in the short-lived Firefly series. That hat that looked so dopey on Adam Baldwin and has become legendary at sci-fi conventions even though it was only in one episode. I think it looks warm and funky and I wanted one the second I saw it on t.v. because I love the colors and the style.

- EXTERMIKNIT! — How cute are these little knit Daleks from Doctor Who? How menacing would they be sitting on your desk in your cubicle?

- R2D2 Beanie — What else can I say?

- Princess Leia Wig — Better to keep your ears warm in Winter.

- Dr. Who’s Scarf (Tom Baker version) — When I was in junior high there was a high school boy who had one of these and I just thought he was so cool and so cute. Actually, he was very cute and the scarf was very geeky, guaranteed to keep any of the snotty, private school high school chicks from dating him and yet still have one under-aged puppy dog following him around.

- Hogwarts Scarves — Now, of course, the Harry Potter craze has replaced the Dr. Who scarf coolness with new scarf coolness based on which house of magic you think you’d be in if you were a student at Hogwarts. Hmmmm… I just realized I can probably do a Gryffindor scarf to go with my Jayne Cobb Hat.

- The Space Invaders Tote – Ahhhh, Atari, the good old days of gaming.

- Binary Scarf – How perfect is this for the IT professional?

- Alien Washcloth — In my favorite green too.

- Geek Chic Dice Bag — What ever pen & paper role-player needs. No, really. Dice bags were always welcome gifts because they were always wearing out from use. I still have a really nice once I bought from a fellow player that is made from velvet and has really pretty embroidery. I use it for carrying jewelry when traveling now and I keep my huge collection of dice in a metal lunch box.

- Coffee Cozy — Because all IT people have a coffee cup attached to their hand. My ex-boyfriend used to say he dreamed of when he could take his coffee extra-venously. In the meantime, he made his coffee with caffeinated water and drank it black. Because the environment is one of my “causes” (you know what I mean), I really like the idea of these because they replace the cardboard hand protector you usually get when you get a to-go cup at your local coffee place. (Of course, it’s best to use your own to-go travel mug every day if the coffee place will go for it — Starbucks will and will give you a nominal discount; though I try to support local businesses that also charge less than an arm and a leg for my morning latte).

- Piglet — Because he’s the most underestimated and under-advertised of all Pooh’s friends. I’ve always thought that if Piglet can do it, then anyone can. He’s kind of my hero. I used him as my anchor back in 2002 when I was losing weight. I thought that it’s really all about the attitude. Piglet might be scared or anxious, but he always pushes on eventually.

- Eeyore — Because his positive-negative personality is most like mine. “It’s sunny today, but it’ll probably rain tomorrow.”

Funky stuff, I love the first one for its wild ends. I have a friend that will dig this!

Those daleks are the cutest little things I have ever seen and I love the Jayne hat and the Tom-Baker-as-the-Doctor scarf….you can see I am a scifi nerd. I don’t knit but these patterns are enough to get me started….
The Daleks are the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen, and I might have to take up knitting just so I can make one. Inspiring post for the geeky knitter in all of us.
Well, I am a great Pooh Bear Fan so, more power to you!
(Want to knit me some Eeyore socks…?) And the princess Leia hat has some strange appeal, but then again I am one for funny hats and socks for that matter… (hint hint)
Jeannine — I will never say no to socks, particularly if they are interesting and different. My doctors and nurses love checking out my quirky socks. A number of my friends are always asking to see if I have something new on. It’s kind of why I am trying to learn how to knit.
Now that I’ve had a few sips of my coffee, I’ve reread the comments. You want me to knit the socks, not the other way around. Well, I’m sure I can put that on my to-do list. Have you seen the to-do list?
Oh, those daleks make me wish I could knit!!!
I’d wish you a happy belated TT-13 too but I am just like you – I’m still trying to catch up with those who commented on mine! But I will and I am so glad you stopped by.
I like the Space Invaders tote. I don’t do well with knitting…I can crochet as long as it’s like a scarf or something…
Happy TT-13!
Smiles,
Holly

Love the Dr. Who stuff! The Tom Baker Dr. Who was the Gold Standard Dr, IMO.
Know what you mean about being a geek w/a hobby. Geekiness+hobby=obsession. *heh* When I took up brewing beer I just couldn’t wait for the first batch to start another… what to do for another fermentation keg??? Result? Kitty Litter Beer.
BTW, thanks for the visit and comment.
Hey great list, I love the first hat! I have a friend who did an alien scarf and it turned out really cool. Thanks for stopping by my TT and the add to your blogroll, add you to mine as well.
I don’t knit either but that Dr Who scarf looks great.
Chris — Is there an online pattern or picture?
#1 is my favorite I love it. I am a crocheter, just learning to knit. It is much more difficult. Thanks for stopping by. It is always better late than never ;-D Have a great day!
Number 11 is kind a cute. I envy you knitters!
Piglet and Eeyore is so cute!
I wish I could knit.
I’m not big on knitting. But surprisingly, some of those are pretty cool . . . I especially like the computer scarf (smile).
OMG. I would kill for a knitted dalek. And that binary scarf. Oh, and the space invaders bag.
I have never before now wished I could knit.
I had three TTs this week. I think you probably know where to find them, so I’ll spare you the cut and paste links.
I love those knitted Daleks!
I sooo want that alien wash cloth …
Thanks so much for stopping by, I enjoyed your list too!
Some pretty wonderful stuff you have there! Very creative!
Thanks for visiting my animated movies TT.
I tried making the coffee cozy yesterday. It did not come out looking like that. *hmph*
Each of them is cuter than the last! I WILL have a Mama Cobb hat one of these days, and I now know that I need a knitted Dalek, and the Space Invaders bag – me want! (But me not knit.)
Thanks for posting my Leia Wig.
Ths scarf is now my present plan for my dad next year. And given that his birthday is in february, and I have an internet and 2 kids to look after… I might struggle to get it done in time!
I’ve been trying to think of what hidden message to put into the binary when I do mine. Are you going to do random binary or something specific?
Check it out, I got you on neatorama!

Just wanted to post another knitter’s attempt at the Jayne Cobb Hat. Not my pattern or anything, but it looked cool:
