Wu Yi Tea Company Stole My Credit Card Number

by J. Lynne on November 22, 2008

in Life

This morning I received an email from wu-yisource.com confirming my order for a free sample of their dieter’s tea, though I was being charged $4.95 for shipping and handling. The email receipt also indicated that the agreement was that if I didn’t like the tea, I could return it within 30 days and my membership would be canceled with no further charge; otherwise, each month afterward, more tea would be shipped to me. Of course, there was all sorts of information about what my new membership entailed and so on.

I might have ignored and junked the email except that it looked like a real receipt from just about any other order receipt for something I bought online and it actually had my real name, address, phone number, and email address. Usually those fake things just use your email address handle as your name. That was a bit alarming. So I started checking it out and I found a website with a whole lot of complaints by people who claimed the company had charged their credit cards without their permission somehow.

The receipt claimed I placed the order last night at 9:30pm. I checked the history on my browser. I wasn’t on any website all evening where I could have even accidentally placed an order. I never would have opted for “free diet tea” anyway since I don’t believe in those diet miracle things and I have a kidney disease and I’m immune deficient.

I tried to call the company, but they’re on Mountain Time and I’m on Eastern Time and I didn’t have the patience to wait for them to wake up and get to work. So I logged on to their website and actually found someone in their online chat-with-a-rep thing. I was shocked that I didn’t have to get too irate. She was a little bit insistent at first that there was an order placed yesterday with all of my information and it had already shipped. (I can’t get anything else shipped that fast!) Finally, she agreed to cancel my “membership” and I promised to ship back the package.

Still, I don’t know how they got my information or my credit card number. I’m going to have to cancel my credit card number for the second time this year — the first time was when Hannaford was hacked earlier this year. I really find this whole thing disturbing. Especially since there were a number of other people complaining about their credit card info either being sold to the wu yi tea people or being sold by them.

So, if you see something in your email that you think might be junk mail about wu yi tea. Don’t just junk it. Check it out first; otherwise, you might end up with charges on your credit card.

Apparently too much of an exhibitionist to stay away forever.

I second Robin’s comment!

Thanks for the info about the tea company. Hopefully they won’t come knocking on my door!

I was charged for 4.95 for two months in a row for things I did not order. I will ask my credit card to stop payment on this one.

Wu-Yi Tea called me today, saying they wanted to confirm a purchase. They had my name, address and E-mail. I had made no purchase. They also said they couldn’t do anything about it, that maybe they’d already shipped me the tea.

They had some credit card number that was not mine.

Those people need to be shut down.

My credit card company called me to fraud protection i called them back and pulled up my account i havent used this card in like 9 months. I noticed that my balance was 400.00 higher than what it was then sure enough a bunch of purchases from wu yi tea. which was about 200 total then it went over my limit and had cost me 200.00 in fees. They started using my card on 11/22/08 and used it 1/22/09 I have never been to their site or ordered anything from any sites like that. Fortunatly my bank canceled my card and reversed all charges and drop the purchaes from this company. They made a fraud report on them.

This is not just Wu Yi. Disney Movie Club, Live Strong, all kinds of companies are involved in this. I have a suspicion that it is those websites that offer free stuff if you sign up for offers. All of these companies are member oriented continuous shipment things and are typically found on those websites. I got charged by four different companies. They had my address, card number and phone number which they changed the last two numbers. They made up an e-mail address.
